Are you stuck in a job you don’t love or do you dream of being your own boss?
If you’re fed up of the rat race and want a change, then maybe running your own pub could be the challenge you crave.
The pandemic has given everyone time for reflection over the last few months and if you’ve decided it’s time for a change, taking your career in a whole new direction could be just what you need.
With more than 1,200 pubs across the UK, Punch Pubs are looking to recruit people who want the challenge and excitement of running their own business.
Want to know what it takes to become a successful publican? We spoke to Vicky Brown, publican recruitment manager for the North West.
And she told us all about the fantastic opportunities available with Punch Pubs.
Have you got what it takes?
There’s more to running a pub than pulling a few pints but if you’ve not got any experience that doesn’t matter, Vicky told us how they’re looking for people with the enthusiasm and passion for running a pub.
She said: “To take on a pub you need to be somebody with the desire to run their own business and have an entrepreneurial spirit.
“The results are based on what you put in as a publican.”
And for those up for the challenge, you’ll have the opportunity to truly make it your own.
Vicky added: “Our publicans have the freedom to let their imaginations run wild, they can host events, run quizzes and game nights.
“It’s important to get the community involved but the bar or pub can be what you make of it.
“If you love sports then go for a sports bar, or if you’re into your food then a gastro pub might be something up your street.”
Of course, some hospitality experience would be an advantage but as long as you enjoy working in a busy and changing environment with a real drive to succeed and have fantastic social skills, being a publican could be for you.
How does it work?
There are three different ways to work with Punch Pubs including a tenancy, lease, or with a management partnership.
But what exactly does that mean and which one is right for you?
With a management partnership, you’ll run the pub on a self-employed basis but with the peace of mind of knowing that most of the day-to-day bills associated with running a small business are not yours.
This leaves you free to focus entirely on your customers and driving sales plus a ready-to-go concept with its marketing calendar.
A tenancy offers greater flexibility with agreements between three and five years.
Your pub will be set up ready to trade and you even have the option of including food, either a menu from Punch Pubs or your own.
You will receive a high level of support throughout your tenancy and have everything you need to run a successful business.
Support includes a dedicated operations manager, 12 support teams, access to training and development, business planning, operations and accounting expertise.
This is an entrepreneurial agreement suitable for people wishing to have a greater input into their business and how it’s run.
If running a pub is something you plan on doing long term, leasing one is another option.
With agreements of 10 years and more, you’ll be able to make your business your own with more flexibility to put your own stamp on it.
How will I be supported?
Something that Vicky says stands Punch Pubs apart from others is the support offered for those running their own pub, right throughout their journey.
She said: “We have a £1 million state-of-the-art training facility which has offices as well as two pub replica working bars, one is your standard pub and another is a premium pub so people can experience the job in different ways.
“We also have an open cellar which you can see in and see all the parts moving and you can get hands on with keg changes and things like that.”
The company is passionate about supporting its publicans to make a real success of their business which is why it invests so much in training and support.
Training and support also includes:
- Punch Academy Online – This online resource is free to use and your window to training support for you and your team. Here you can book an Academy Workshop, complete e-learning or dive into the bookshelf full of business guides.
- Winning Workshops – These workshops will also keep you up-to-date with the latest industry food and drink trends and marketing tips, or even legislation that may affect your business.
- Punch Academy Pathways – The team are always on hand to help you build your business and will provide tailored pathways for your continued development and growth.
The Punch story
The public house has always been a Great British institution, and it was this idea that led to Punch being born in 1997. Wanting to link brilliant people with brilliant pubs to keep Great British pubs firmly at the heart of local communities.
In 2017 an online ordering portal was relaunched – The Punch Buying Club – making it mobile friendly, faster and more efficient for publicans to order at a time to suit them, access paperless billing, dispense data, as well as a whole set of other features. In just 12 months, The Punch Buying Club took it’s 100,000th order, and sold a staggering 100 million pints.
Punch has taken huge steps forward over the last year, investing over £35 million in its estate in 2019, unlocking phenomenal pub possibilities for entrepreneurs across the UK, as well as opening its new Welcome Inn at Punch HQ and The Academy – an industry leading training space with two fully working bars and a cellar, alongside a development kitchen, enabling Publicans to learn in a classroom, a pub and a kitchen at the same time.
And finally, in 2020 Punch Pubs & Co was crowned The Best Tenanted & Leased Company at the Publican Awards.
